hetken joulu -- a short christmas

meidän jouluretki oli hyvin pikapikainen. aattoillaksi perille ja tapaninaamuna pois täiepisodin puhjettua! melko väsyjä olimme kun lasten flunssat alkoivat iskeä minunkin päälle ja yöt olivat katkonaisia. onneksi edessä on pitkä loma levätä.

our christmas visit was very quick. we got there for the christmas eve and because of a head lice episode we left on the morning of the 26th. we were quite tired because the children's flu started to catch me also and the nights were broken. luckily we will have a long holiday to rest.

postikorttimaisemissa oli kiva ajella.

it was nice to drive in a post card scenery that is now everywhere here.

äidin joululaatikot maistuvat aina. kinkun ystävä en ole niinkään. kalasta tykkään, mutta nyt on oltava vähän varovainen monen kalaruuan kanssa.

mom's christmas casseroles are always yummy. i'm not that much of a fan of ham. i like fish but at the moment i need to be careful with many traditional fish dishes.

sweet hearts staring at santa claus. so much enthusiasm and nervousness in the air!

kotona odottivat amerikan joulupukin yllätykset. hän välitti meille sukulaistemme lahjoja. kotimatkalla S kysyi huolissaan: "mutta miten se pääsee meille kun meillä ei ole savupiippua?". pöydällä oli kirje, josta luimme vastauksen: "tällä kertaa pääsin sisään keittiön ikkunan kautta". ongelma ratkaistu...

at home the surprises of american santa were waiting for us. he delivered the gifts of our relatives. on the way back home S was worried: "but how will he get into our house because we don't have a chimney?" there was a letter on our table saying: "this time i was able to use your kitchen window". problem solved ...

"S, look! this is so cool!" "D, look! this is awesome!" they make M and i smile with their new favorite english expressions.

E: "this is almost the same size i am!"

kiitos kaikille sekä täällä että maailmalla ihanista lahjoistanne. kaikki olivat hyvin mieluisia. hyvin keksittyjä. minäkin sain monia ihania ja tarpeellisia lahjoja.

thank you all here and far away for your lovely and generous gifts. they all were so much liked. well known what the boys would like. i also got many lovely and needed gifts.

christmas does come also to a mud puddle plastic bag.

toisella seinustalla tosin vihdoin tapahtui ihme. lauantaina meidän kolmesta ikkunasta poistettiin muovit. tuntuu hienolta tuntea aitoa kiitollisuutta niinkin pienestä asiasta kuin siitä että ikkunoista näkee ulos.

on the other wall though a miracle finally happened. on saturday the plastics were taken away from three windows of ours. it feels nice to feel sincere gratitude about such a small thing like the fact that you're able to see outside through your windows.

olemme vielä kotona, mutta eiköhän me vielä päästä matkaan, jouluaattoillaksi perille perheen pariin. liinan alla odottaa aikuisten pullakranssi ja sen vierellä lasten vaalea kuivakakku.

we're still at home but most likely we will be able to leave tomorrow and spend christmas eve with the family. there is a pulla wreath under the towel for adults and near it a cake for the children waiting for the trip.

lilla a:n blogista tulostimme 250 g A4 kartongeille aihiot näiden autojen askastelemiseksi. mukavaa pikku puuhaa. puukynäjälki minusta kiva.

we printed on 250 g A4s some drawings to make these cars. D and S colored theirs. daddy helped with E's.

ollaan availtu pikku joulumuistamisia. mukavia suussasulavia paketteja.

we've been opening some small christmas greetings. nice handmade chocolates and things.

täällä oli tänään ihmeellisen kaunista.

lumen alta löytyi mielenkiintoisia jäälohkareita, joista D, S ja E rakensivat pyramidin.

some interesting ice boulders were found under the snow. D, S and E built a pyramid out of them.

joulun ihmemaa -- winter wonderland

tässä hieman maisemakuvia eiliseltä retkeltämme tapaamaan ystävämammaa ja E:n ystävää. sain pitää sylissä vajaat kolme kuukautta olevaa vauvaa. pientä olkapäälle nukahtavaa sammakkoa. sellaista jolla hereillä ollessaan on melkein koko ajan kestohymy päällä.

some nature pictures from our yesterday's trip to visit a mama friend and a friend of E. i had a chance to hold a three month old baby. a little frog who falls asleep on your shoulder. a young baby who has a permanent smile on his face while awake.

joulukiire -- christmas bustle

nuorena päätin että minulla ei tule koskaan olemaan joulukiirettä. miksi stressata jouluruuista. ostaa vaikka kaupasta valmislaatikoita. tai joululahjoista. keskittyä olennaiseen ja yhdessäoloon. mutta silti on jonkunlainen kiire tässä olevinaan. listanläpikäymismeininki ja kalenterinvilkuilu. kiire tulee enimmäkseen siitä kun lukee samoja listoja ja tapahtumia läpi uudestaan ja uudestaan. niin kauan kunnes kaikki on tehty! kunnes kaikki juhlat on juhlittu ja kaapin kätköissä olevat lahjat kääritty. sama koskee vauvavalmisteluja. nekin jo mielessä, vaikka vauvan syntymään on vielä 3,5 kuukautta. välillä kiiremielestä ei ole merkkiäkään. luemme kirjoja kirjojen perään tai makaan lastenhuoneen lattialla keskellä elämän ydintä. tai asettaudun hiljaisessa talossa sohvalle kaakaon ja voileipien ääreen ja avaan telkkarin. ehkä parasta joulunajassa on tietynlainen musiikki ja oman elämän pohdinta. ja se kun voi oikeasti ilahduttaa yksinäisiä. sairaalassa olevia ainakin.

when i was a teenager i decided that i would never get caught up in the christmas bustle. why stress about the christmas food? if so just buy some ready made casseroles from the store. or about the christmas gifts. just concentrate on the essentials and spending time together. but still there is some sort of bustle around me here. going through the lists and glancing the calendar. the bustle is mostly caused by reading the same lists and happenings again and again. as long as everything is done! until all the parties have been celebrated and the hidden gifts wrapped. the baby preparations are also in my mind although there is still 3.5 months to the delivery. sometimes the hurrying mind doesn't show any signs. we read books after books or i lay on the children's room floor in the middle of the core of life. or i place myself in the quiet house on the couch with some sandwiches and hot chocolate and turn on the tv. maybe the best thing in the christmas season is a certain type of music and reflecting on your life. and cheering up lonely ones. at least the ones in the hospital.

nämä kuvat ovat lohjalta. pakenimme mieheni kanssa väljemmille vesille kaupungin suhinasta. kiitos kuuluu eräällä ihanalle vapaaehtoiselle lapsenvahdille. markkinoilta ei tullut otettua kuvia, mutta museon alueelta oli pakko napsaista pari kuvaa.

these pictures are from lohja. my husband and i escaped to the wider waters from the rustle of the city. thanks to a lovely voluntary babysitter. i didn't take any pictures from the old stylish christmas market but around the museum i had to take couple of shots.

meidän illallinen: karjalaisten leipomat perunapiirakat, karjalanpiirakat, maustekakut ja murokakut.

our dinner: potato pies, rice pies, christmas spice cakes and white cakes made by some karelian women.

jääpuistossa -- in the ice park

hyvää suomen itsenäisyyspäivää! tänään lapset innostuivat tekemään eri maiden lippuja. kiinnitimme ne kesällä pestyihin jäätelöpuikkoihin.

happy finnish independence day! today the children became enthusiastic about making flags from different countries. we just attached them to some ice cream sticks we washed in the summer.

sitten teimme retken keskustaan. luistelemaan! kiva paikka tuo jääpuisto. tänään siellä sattui olemaan itsenäisyyspäivän ohjelmaakin: lippujen askartelua, saunabussi ja karaoke. ihan oli taas tippa linssissä kun katselin onnelisten riemua musiikin soidessa. muidenkin ilo tarttui. ihmiset nauttivat liukumisesta ja tanssimisesta.

then we made a trip to the city. to ice skate! what a nice place the ice park is. today they happened to have some independence day activities: a flag workshop, a sauna bus and karaoke. once again tears came to my eyes while watching the happy ones' joy. also the joy of other ice skaters rubbed off. people were dancing and smiling with the music.

aurauksen ollessa käynnissä S kysyi voisiko hän laulaa kulkuset englanniksi. karaokemikkiin tarttuivat niin nuoret, lapset kuin aikuisetkin. myös turistit. hauskaa.

while the ice cleaner was working S asked if he could sing 'jingle bells' in english. teenagers, children and adults all grabbed the microphone. also some tourists. fun.

ja kukas se siinä laulaakaan. keskellä helsinkiä kaikelle kansalle. alussa vakava ilme mutta tätä laulua laulaessa oli hymy herkässä hällä ja muilla.

and who is singing here. in the middle of helsinki to the whole population. the face is pretty serious first but while singing this song he and other people were smiling.

parasta oli pyöriä alas ison lumikasan päältä. paljon lunta tänään ja lisää senkun tupruttaa. ihailimme myös sokoksen jouluikkunaa. se on aika kiva tänä vuonna.

the best part was to roll down from the big snow piles. lots of snow today and more is falling. we also went and admired the sokos (department store) christmas window. it's quite nice this year.

ja nyt odottelen miestä kotiin työpaikan pikkujouluista. taidanpa mennä unille.

and now i'm waiting for my husband to come home from the work christmas party. i shall go to sleep.

viikonloppu -- happy weekend

tulin tänne kertomaan, että kannattaa kokeilla tätä joulupullaa! niin pehmeää ja maukasta. ohje uusimmassa yhteishyvässä. aprikoosihillovalelu kruunaa kokonaisuuden. en ole aiemmin tajunnutkaan että pullan voisi valella hillolla. ainakin aprikoosihillo sopii hyvin.

i came here to tell that it's worth trying out this christmas pulla! so soft and delicious. the recipe is from the newest yhteishyvä. the apricot jam topping makes it perfect. i haven't realized before that you could cover pulla with some jam. at least apricot jam suits well.

viikunoita ja anista laitoin puolet vähemmän, jotta lapset eivät nirsoilisi niin paljon. minulle myös oli just sopiva määrä.

i put half the amount of figs and anise so the children wouldn't be too picky. it was actually the right amount for me too.

pitkä itsenäisyysviikonloppu alkoi täällä siis varsin suomalaisesti. pullaa ja lisäksi iso kattilallinen hernekeittoa. luistimet on haettu suutarilta teroituksesta --katsotaan tuleeko tilaisuus jo kokeilla. mukavaa leppoisaa viikonloppua teille kaikille!

so the long finnish independence day weekend started here in very finnish way. some pulla and also a big pot of pea soup. the ice skates are sharp again --let's see if we'll already have a chance to try them out. comfortable and relaxing weekend to you all!
